The effect of sowing time on the performance of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under rice (Oryza sativa L.) fallow situations was studied during 1997 and 1998 in Vertisols of northern Karnataka. Early sowing re- sulted in better growth and recorded higher seed yield of 1,016 kglha and 1,010 kglha during 1997 and 1998 re- spectively. Early-planted crop gave 44.3% higher seed yield than late-planted one. Hybrids outyielded variety 'Morden'. The hybrid 'KBSH 1' recorded the highest average seed yield (965 kglha), followed by 'PAC 36' (922 kglha). Similarly, the highest oil yield of 385 kglha was also obtained in 'KBSH 1'. The productivity of all the culti- vars was reduced under delayed sowing.References
