Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Modipuram in Meerut district during 1993-94 to 1995-96 to study the effect of diversification, nutrient uptake and net return under different crop sequences. Treatments comprised eight sequential1 inter cropping systems : maize (Zea mays L.) Naveen, wheat [Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol.] HD 2285, maize - sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) MSFH 8, + blackgram (Phaseolus mungo Roxb.) Type 9-wheat, maize+ maize blackgram-sunflower, pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] UPAS 120 - wheat + pigeonpea-sunflower + pigeonpea + blackgram-wheat, and pigeonpea + blackgram-sunflower. These cropping sequences were evaluated for their production potential and economics. Pigeonpea + blackgram-sunflower followed by maize + blackgram-sunflower removed the maximum quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The highest net profit on per-hectare investment was recorded with pigeonpea + blackgram-sunflower crop sequence (Rs 2.70) followed by pigeonpea- sunflower (Rs 2.64).
